How much does local SEO cost for a funeral director?

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a technical term, jargon if you like, for the technical task of preparing web pages in such a way as to improve the prospects of those pages being found in a Google search (or other search engine).

How much does local SEO cost for a funeral director

In this article we will:

  • Look at the local SEO cost for a funeral director in general terms with data from a Google search
  • Define what we mean by SEO and look at the various services that could be included under the umbrella of the term
  • Consider the value of SEO to a business and the potential for a return on investment
  • Finally, we will answer specifically the question of what we charge funeral directors for search engine optimisation and what is and what is not included in our pricing.

SEO included with every website

Every website that we build at Funeral Director Websites is search engine optimised for our clients most desired search term and we make it our mission to achieve success, i.e. a page 1 result for that client and that term. And we’re experts at doing that.

Almost 100% of the time the most desired search term would be ‘funeral director mytown’. Results will be governed by the competitiveness of the search term, influenced by variables such as the locality of the business, the geographical size of the area, the number of competing businesses in that area and how well those competitors have optimised their websites.

Bringing up the rear on the primary search term ‘funeral director mytown’ there are a number of what I would describe as secondary search terms, right at the top of that list I would place ‘funeral plan mytown’

Searches for funeral plan information have grown steadily in recent years as shown on the Google Trends graph.

Funeral Plan Search Trends from 2004 to Present Date

Competition, in terms of both organic and, to a much greater extent, paid ads such as PayPerClick, has skyrocketed. Find out more about PPC for funeral directors here https://www.funeraldirectorwebsites.co.uk/pay-per-click-marketing-for-funeral-directors/

Following funeral plan searches, other popular terms include ‘direct cremation’, ‘traditional funeral’, ‘funeral costs’, ‘funeral announcements’, ‘memorial jewellery’ and more. Following the secondary terms the third list would be practically endless, searches for funeral related information are limited only by the imagination and curiosity of the general public.

Think of every question you’ve been asked in person over the last five years and that is a potential search term. Even better, try to think of every funeral related question you might be asked over the next year and you have the potential to clean up in search results for your area.

While being found in searches is a goal worth achieving it is not, however, the ultimate goal because in itself it achieves nothing. Rather, being found in a search is step one in a process. Once you are found there needs to be worthwhile content that is going to result in someone clicking through, reading your content, getting in touch with you and finally, becoming a paying customer.

This would be measured as:

  • The position of your content (in Google search result) for a search term
  • The number of click throughs on that content
  • The number of conversions from that content
  • And ultimately, the revenue from that content

What we mean by SEO

We work exclusively with funeral directors and we think about search engine optimisation from the unique perspective of a funeral business. The overriding priority for ALL of our customers is to be on page 1 in searches in their area for the crucial search terms we mentioned earlier. The technical work in making that happen is what we term as SEO.

Services that could be included under the umbrella of the term

  • On page SEO – making sure that content on a page is optimised exclusively for one target search term
  • Page title optimisation
  • Meta-Tag optimisation
  • Keyphrase optimisation
  • Image optimisation
  • Google My Business (GMB) optimisation
  • Reputation management (GMB & other reviews)
  • Social Media optimisation
  • Resources integration (Funeral Announcements, product galleries)

UK SEO Costs Research

A quick search for SEO services in the UK produced a range of charges including on the first page of results one company starting from £99 per month and another starting from £125 per month.

The value of SEO to a funeral business

Unlike PayPerClick, organic search optimisation does not produce immediate results, it’s a long term strategy and could include technical SEO, content marketing, and link building. Traffic earned from these efforts represent a long term investment.

Search engine optimisation is sometimes referred to as ‘money in the bank’. That may seem to be over stating the value but there can be no denying that once a page has been successfully optimised and ranked on page results, it has the potential to provide ongoing returns without the ongoing costs associated with other forms of advertising (save perhaps for a review and tweak at infrequent intervals.) Unlike most other forms of advertising, which disappear as soon as you stop paying, SEO remains in place working for your business.

Potential for a return on investment

One of my favourite examples is of the person who was fulfilling their loved one’s wish to be buried in a banana leaf coffin. She searched for ‘banana leaf coffin’ and the funeral director who featured this item on their website came up in the search, received the enquiry and went on to arrange the funeral. This business was several miles away from the family arranging the funeral.

Beyond the initial value of being asked to arrange the funeral of someone’s loved one as a result of being found online there is the potential for much more. When you arrange a funeral for a family you will naturally make it your business to be always remembered for how well you cared for them, leading to the real prospect of a customer for a long time.

Below is an example of a page that we recently search engine optimised https://agmorrissfunerals.co.uk/pre-paid-funeral-plans-worthing. The goal was a page one listing on Google for the search term ‘funeral plans worthing’, this goal was achieved in less than one week.
